You Took That Picture for a Reason

Everyday photos with You Took That Picture for a Reason article title

Take a quick scroll through your camera roll. Somewhere between the birthdays, vacations, screenshots and the 14 nearly identical pictures you took trying to get one good one, you’ll probably find plenty of photos that don’t look particularly important. A cup of coffee. The dog sleeping in a ridiculous position. Flowers on the counter. Your grandkid’s shoes kicked off by the door. They may not mean much to anyone else, but you stopped what you were doing and took the picture. There was a reason for that.

The Good Stories Aren’t Always the Big Ones

When we think about scrapbooking, it’s easy to think about the big stuff first. Birthdays, Christmas, vacations and all those events that practically arrive with a flashing sign that says, “THIS BELONGS IN AN ALBUM.” But sometimes the photos that bring back the most are the ordinary ones we snapped because something made us laugh, caught our attention or simply felt worth remembering.

A picture of a coffee mug might remind you of a morning routine you’ve had for years. A messy kitchen could bring back Sunday dinners when everyone still lived at home. The photo itself doesn’t have to be spectacular because sometimes it’s what you remember when you look at it that matters most.

You Don’t Have to Scrapbook Everything

Before this starts sounding like I’m suggesting you turn your entire camera roll into scrapbook pages, absolutely not. Nobody has time for that. You don’t have to scrapbook every photo, start with the oldest one or spend the rest of your natural life trying to “catch up.” Instead, pay attention to the photos that make you stop scrolling because they make you smile, laugh or remember something you haven’t thought about in a while.

When you find one, ask yourself one simple question: Why did I take this picture? You don’t need the perfect words or even an idea for the scrapbook page yet. Just notice what the photo brought back. That’s usually where the good stuff is hiding.

Found a photo that made you stop?

I created Start with One Memory to help you take that one photo, think about the story behind it and turn it into a starting point for your scrapbooking. No catching up required. No tackling your entire camera roll. Just one photo and one memory at a time.

Start with One Memory guide, a free scrapbook resource that helps you turn one photo into a story worth preserving.

Grab your free copy of Start with One Memory and I’ll also welcome you to What’s Baking at StampinBuds, my weekly helping of creativity, connection and inspiration.

And the next time you’re scrolling through your camera roll, don’t worry about how many pictures are waiting for you. Just watch for the one that makes you stop. You might be surprised by how much of a story can be hiding inside one very ordinary photo.

Besides, if you took 14 versions of it, we already know there must be something worth remembering.
